What is a Foster Parent?
Foster parents provide an important service to the community.
They provide safe and nurturing homes for abused and
neglected children, until such time as children can return to
their families of origin.
Missouri's children in foster care have differing needs, and are
of varying ages and races. Foster families also come in many
forms. Some are single parents, and others are married
couples. Foster families come from a wide range of economic
backgrounds as well.
In Missouri, the largest need for foster homes is for teens and
pre-teens, and for special-needs children. Specifically, the
following children currently have the greatest need for a loving,
stable foster family:
- Adolescents
- Members of sibling groups
- Children of African-American heritage
- Children/youth with serious emotional disturbances
- Medically fragile children
Our agency provides STARS foster parent training, Spaulding
adoption training, and in-service training to meet annual
